Hold Everything's Studio Spine Bookcase:

This is a budget take on the Sapien Bookcase by Bruno Rainaldi sold at Design Within Reach but I actually like it better than the original. It's a nice, medium height of about 5' 9" (the Sapien models are either too short — 5 feet— or too tall— nearly 7 feet). And it's available in white, which means it really would blend into the wall.
We have a big empty corner (where the rats' cage was before they died) that would be nicely filled with art books on this shelf.

Yes, but what about the dust?
Also, I'm not sure if books are supposed to lie flat or be upright. Maybe your wife knows. We must have done a story on that at some point...

Dust is always a problem in our apartment— I vacuum all the time.
As far as the proper storage, I know RS has often shown photos of books stacks on their sides. And Bri and I already have all our large art books stacked that way. Since the librarian has not flipped out yet over it, it must not be too bad.

Actually, books on their sides are probably ok. Books on their sides in THAT bookcase might be less so, as they are only being supported in a portion of their surface area, creating the potential to warp.

But my real librarian critique of those shelves (which are very attractive) is that they're not stunningly functional. To get anything out, you have to take out lots of other books. Not so with books standing vertically....

That's function, though, not form.
